Lemon Ginger Detox Tonic for Winter

Lemon Ginger Winter Tonic Recipe

Last Wednesday was the second coldest day in Chicago history… we just barely managed to stay under the -27 degrees record set on January 20, 1985.

The SECOND. COLDEST. DAY. IN. CHICAGO. HISTORY.

It was 23 degrees below zero. Colder than the summit of Mount Everest or Antartica…

To say it was brutal would be an understatement. You don’t know cold until you accidentally burn your hand on your front door handle because you weren’t wearing gloves.

But…

By Sunday, temperatures had risen to almost 55 degrees… a near 90 degree shift in temperature over a four day period.

Us native Chicagoans are used to wild, insane temperature swings. We get ALL kinds of extreme weather, all times of the year. But temperature swings like this always mean one thing: SICKNESS.

And it’s true — already, a week after our polar vortex, people right and left are complaining about stuffy noses, mucus, and lots of other romantic symptoms.

And that’s where today’s recipe comes in.

When temperatures plummet or start shifting wildly, this is the drink you need.

The winter savior.

I religiously drink this easy-to-make detox tonic throughout the cold months to help boost my immune system against illness and to help keep me hydrated in the dry air.

Lemon is a natural diuretic that helps purge unwanted water weight and ginger detoxifies the body, removing unwanted chemicals and improving digestion.

The combination, served hot, is one of the most warming elixirs, not to mention one of the most inexpensive to make.

All you need is a lemon, ginger root, and hot water!

Yields 1 – 4 Servings

1 Lemon
1 Ginger Root
Water

Bring water to a boil (I’ve used this kettle since 2012 and cannot recommend it enough).

Slice lemon and ginger. You can also grate the ginger however I prefer how it looks sliced (it’s how they serve ginger tea in Amsterdam).

Add lemon and ginger slices to your mug of choice and pour hot water over.

Steep for five minutes then enjoy.
