The arrival of March always signals the arrival of “Breton Stripe Season” for me. Don’t get me wrong — I wear breton stripes YEAR ROUND (case in point: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4). But with the not-too-distant arrival of Spring this month, all I ever seem to want to wear in March are those timeless french stripes.

Originally introduced as part of the French naval uniform in 1858, Coco Chanel indoctrinated the military print into the fashion world with her nautical collection in 1917 and breton stripes have been a chic classic ever since.

And for good reason!

Breton Stripes seamlessly work with a myriad of styles and patterns. They add a pop of freshness to just about any look (and who doesn’t want to freshen up their looks in March?). And paired with a classic trench coat and nude pumps, simple stripes take on a timelessly chic persona. I find myself recreating this look over and over again every March without fail.

Welcome to Breton Stripe Season!
