As someone who loves to be stylish, I have to admit I HATED snow for the longest time.

It’s a real challenge to dress well when you’re trudging through knee-deep powdery snow. Or ice.

A challenge that baffled me for many years.

But after a lot of experimentation with my snow day essentials, photoshoots in the snow, recommendations from friends, and even skiing in the Arctic Circle, I think I’ve nailed the formula…

How To Stay Stylish In The Snow

1. Use Smart Layers

The key to not freezing to death in the damp, cold snow is layers. And not just any layers, smart layers.

Years ago I resisted the idea of long underwear on principle. Beyond its complete lack of sex appeal, long underwear always sounded like such an unnecessary hassle.

But after I went to Finland last March, I’m addicted to smart tech layers. My favorites are from Uniqlo — they’re soft, silky, incredibly warm and all under $25:

2. Wear Cashmere or Wool Sweaters, Never Cotton

I used to buy a lot of cotton sweaters and no wonder I didn’t think they did much to keep me warm in the snow: the moment you begin sweating you’ll be drenched and frozen in just a few minutes. Not pleasant.

Wool and cashmere have a very dry way of keeping you warm in the frosty snow — be sure to wear these (with your smart layers) instead of anything cotton-based.

3. Invest in a Pair of Stylish Snow Boots

Oh-so-very-necessary in the snow. Proper foot protection is key! As are thick wool socks.

I love my Sorels (especially because they have a thin faux fur lining) but there are so many great options at just about any price point.

Here are a few of my favorites:

4. Always Add A Pop Of Color

Bold color and pops of vibrant hues look SMASHING in the snowy white of winter.

I always love to add a bold lip to my snow day outfit for a little life and FUN!

5. Don’t Forget Stylish Outerwear

THE most important element to staying stylish in the snow!

My Mom gifted my sister this killer Barbour for Christmas this year so naturally we BOTH shot with it in today’s post but there are so many great coats that’ll look stylish AND keep you warm in the snow.

And a pop of color here always helps too!
