Channeling Queen Mab

Queen Mab Shakespeare Halloween CostumeO, then, I see Queen Mab hath been with you.
She is the fairies’ midwife, and she comes
In shape no bigger than an agate-stone
On the fore-finger of an alderman,
Drawn with a team of little atomies
Athwart men’s noses as they lies asleep…

— Shakespeare, “Romeo & Juliet”

Happy Halloween!

Have you ever built a Halloween costume around one piece from your wardrobe? That’s exactly what I did this year! Back when I was in high school my mother sewed me this dress so I could be Isolde for Halloween. I loved it. This dress may be one of the most magnificent I’ve ever worn, and not just because it was made with love. The train itself has so many folds of fabric, it feels positively magical to swish it around behind you as you walk.

So when I found this long-forgotten dress in my Nana’s house this summer, I knew I wanted to turn it into another Halloween costume. But what?

I decided to search through some Shakespeare texts from college for inspiration and came across Mercutio’s speech about Queen Mab in Romeo and Juliet.

As the mischievous yet primarily benevolent Queen of the Fairies, Mab, from English Folklore, was the perfect second incarnation for this dress.

Dark, somewhat sinister, and magical — the perfect Halloween costume!

And just in case you’re still stumped for your Halloween costume tonight, why not try a quick, gothic smokey eye?

Take an eyeliner brush, some kajal eyeliner (like my favorite from VB x Estée Lauder, available here) blend around the inner lines of the eyes. Add a wash of light gray eyeshadow over the whole eyelid (I use Bobbi Brown ‘Slate’) then finish with a light wash of concealer on the lips to add to the drama of your eyes.
