**PLEASE NOTE: Owen & Alchemy is now closed. However, since I loved their juice blends SO much, I’m leaving this post up as a momento**
Last week the hotly anticipated, chef-driven cold-press juice bar Owen + Alchemy opened its organic doors in Logan Square. Gigi and I couldn’t wait to try their artisan blends and roam their minimalistic space at 2355 N. Milwaukee Ave so we ran over on opening day to have a peek.Set up like an alchemist’s chic, gothic lair, Owen + Alchemy’s store features abundant black-on-black decor complimented with succulents, moss and other plants. One wall hosts this enormous alchemic wheel — a holistic medallion of runes that feels especially appropriate for spooky October. The interior is lush with plants growing right out of modern sculptures, like this front window cross of moss and succulents. The dark moody aesthetic is balanced with touches of gold and white evoking a haunting minimalism that feels almost like a botanical laboratory.
These delicate succulent drop sculptures were my favorite piece of decor — clean and geometric yet still natural. The employees all don black origami-esque smocks which blend seamlessly into the aesthetic of the store. But it’s the company’s signature medallion necklaces which could really start a trend here in Chicago. Seriously, how cute is that signature pendant?Owen + Alchemy seek to nourish the body through wholesome organic juices and vials of their house-made booster blends. Their motto: “Let Food Be Thy Medicine”. For those of you seeking to truly restart your body, O+A also offers their own juice cleanses which they have holistically produced in partnership with the Raby Institute for Integrative Nutrition at Northwestern. Their organic menu is extensive and broken down into groups based on the primary ingredients in each juice. Owen + Alchemy personally sources their ingredients from local farmers, often helping small operations afford the pricey USDA organic certifications.Because O+A cold-presses all of their juice blends, each bottle contains the highest amount of nutrients possible. In fact, each bottle packs in a whopping five pounds of local produce! But that doesn’t mean that taste comes secondary…
First we sampled this savory No. 46 blend of heirloom tomato, celery, sun-dried tomato, carrot and sea salt. I’d rather call this the superhero’s V8 — a beautiful marriage of vegetables that was hydrating, refreshing and yet light. In the spirit of honesty, I really dislike V8 but I can’t wait to go back and grab a bottle of this, it was THAT good.We sampled a few more blends and swooned over the packaging of each bottle: brilliantly simple, just how I like my labels.
We ultimately decided on fall-themed juices. I chose the seasonal offering of heirloom pear and mulling spices (no label since it was so new), while Gigi snagged a No. 33 (sweet potato, carrot, apple, cinnamon, ginger) and a No. 57 (raw almond, turmeric root, raw cashew, cardamom, ginger, raw local honey).I’m a sucker for anything brewed with mulling spices in fall and this blend did not disappoint. The heirloom pear flavor was bright and well-balanced with the heady spices — if you have the chance to try this seasonal offering, do! It’s as indulgent as apple cider but significantly healthier.
Owen + Alchemy offers a discount on your next juice if you bring your bottle back but I’m torn — my bottle looks so chic as a vase on my desk.
I can’t wait to stop in again and continue sipping my way through the O+A juice rainbow!
