Dove’s Luncheonette

Dove's Luncheonette Chicago Diner, Wicker Park I love a good diner — the comfortable atmosphere, the friendly staff and delicious low-brow fare. Diners are cozy and filled with food, my two favorite things. So when Shaheen told me the owners of Big Star (my favorite taco joint in Chicago, post here!) had opened a mexican-style diner named Dove’s Luncheonette right next door and suggested we eat there for lunch a couple of weeks ago, I said YES and may have fist-pumped the air. Lows to Luxe at Dove's Luncheonette Chicago Shaheen rocking dark florals for our lunch date — check out her outfit post from our after-lunch photoshoot here.Dove's Luncheonette Chicago Dove’s is brand new to the Chicago restaurant scene but already insanely popular (like everything owned by One Off Hospitality… ahem, Avec)! Luckily Shaheen and I were able to snag spots in a lovely corner and by the time our long lunch date was over, I was able to shoot some of the decor after the lunch crowd had cleared.Dove's Luncheonette Placemats Dove's Luncheonette Diner Interior Chicago Isn’t the atmosphere charming? Dove's Luncheonette Chicago NapkinsRight down to the red-striped cloth napkins.
Dove's Luncheonette Pozole Rojo Shaheen ordered the Pozole Rojo: guajillo chili broth braised pork shoulder and hominy with avocado, lime, cabbage, cilantro, radish and crispy tortillas. The bowl was gigantic! Dove's Luncheonette Chicago Pozole Rojo Just look at that insanity! Holy guacamole, eh?Vuelve a la Vida Tomato Seafood Ceviche Dove's ChicagoBut ceviche, you will always have my heart! I ordered the Vuelve a la Vida: fresh seafood lightly marinated in tomato, orange and lime juice tossed with tomatoes, habanero, avocado and cilantro. Vuelve a la Vida means ‘back to life’ in Spanish and I have to say, this little number would make a seriously good hangover cure (it’s like seafood and a bloody mary met, married and are making music together in a sundae glass).
Vuelve a la Vida Ceviche Dove's Chicago I felt like a kid eating a giant savory red milkshake! The ceviche marinade was good n’ spicy, balancing out the citrus and the avocado perfectly. And the seafood provided a great chilled balance to the flavor profile. I didn’t really find the saltine crackers necessary and preferred to slurp up the ceviche on its own, spoonful by zesty spoonful. This meal is exactly what I was hoping for when we walked into Dove’s — mexican comfort food, served up with a side of nostalgia!Aquatalia Royal Booties Black Modalu Pippa BagAfter lunch we challenged ourselves to try shooting in the residential streets nearby, and had a lot of fun dodging cars!

This is essentially what I wear whenever I’m in a huge hurry but want to look put together — I wore the hat because my hair was doing some sort of kinking acrobatics that morning and the booties because they are so insanely comfortable to walk around all day in. I carried my Modalu bag because it fits everything and goes with everything. And I’ve been pretty much living in my trench coats lately so I tied everything together with this deliciously cozy faux-fur stole (so much more luxurious than a traditional scarf — though maybe not a blanket scarf). Simple, classic and yet incredibly comfortable.
